Canada's food guide

So here I am back on another health rant but in a good way.

Do you know how much you eat at one meal, in one day or in a week. Have you ever been anal enough to religiously write it all done and check. It's not something I would normally do because I have a notorious love of fine, decadent food and an appreciation of good wine, chocolate and the occasional cigar. But I did it because a dear friend inspired me with a claim to want to loose a significant amount of weight which made me gulp a little. And made me realize that I had actually gained 10lbs this year and I am not a happy camper. So after doing a little research and with a whisper in the ear of a cute public health worker I got the info I needed.

A woman of my age and activity level needs 2 servings of dairy products, 2 - 3 servings of meats, 7 - 8 servings of fruit and vegetables, 6 - 7 servings of grains and 3 servings of fat. When I looked it up on the chart guide to see just how big a serving was I nearly fell over in a flat faint. No wonder I'm such a porker. There is little lee way for my favorite beverages or bon bons. A 2 1/2oz piece of meat is 1 serving. You are kidding right.......... Nope I am not. Considering I have been known to chow down on an 8oz steak. But you know me in for a penny in for a pound (pardon the pun) I thought I would experiment and see how bad it would be to follow this for 5 days just to see how I would feel and if I could actually do it

And you know what? It wasn't so bad after all. It was a little tricksy in that I had trouble meeting my requirements for fruit and veg. With feelings of oh crap what do you mean I have to eat another piece of fruit and put the cookies away? The dairy wasn't a problem because of my lactose intolerance. I could just about kill you for a nice juicy steak right now and I went a little over on my grain options. Cutting back on the fat was easy and I managed not to drink any wine this week. I'm saving it all up for tomorrow.

When I say it wasn't to bad I am being quite sincere about it as I still managed to have coffee and and a treat with a friend this week. Had lunch out and made a reasonably healthy lunch choice at a new Chinese food place in the Shwa. I also indulged in a small lactose free pumpkin spice coffee. And the best part of it all is I lost a couple of pounds. I haven't yet figured how much I was eating before this experiment and it's probably best that I don't.

If you are interested in looking up the food guide here is the link.

So good health to you my dear friends and if you don't want that steak I'll take it and pass me that bottle of merlot will you dear.
